The Seven Brothers of ElkoBrinley Phillips obviously has a specific ‘Do Not Cross’ threshold when dealing with the public at large. Listen as she describes to Jake what she envisions would be the end result of that line being breached had she followed her childhood dream.Excerpt from Jake – Book 1 of the new series The Seven Brothers of Elko coming October 2012

“What did you want to be when you were little?” he asked.

She rolled her eyes in what he read to mean she thought what she was about to say was silly or a foolish dream. He wanted to tell her that no dreams are silly or foolish. If dreams were practical they wouldn’t be called dreams. They’d be called life. Instead of saying that, he stayed silent and waited.

“I was going to have my own little cabin somewhere in the mountains, any mountains, and be the next great novelist.”

He raised his eyebrows in surprise. “What changed your mind?”

She shrugged her shoulders a little and said, “One of my teachers. He brought a book on programming to school one day and gave it to me. He said I was wasting a God-given talent and I should ‘give this a try.’ I was hooked right from the first page.”

“You love what you do, don’t you? No chance of still becoming the next world famous novelist?”

Brinley scoffed but didn’t answer him. He reached over and hooked his fingers beneath her chin and turned her face to him. “You know… you can be anything you want. Dreams don’t have to stay dreams. It’s important to do what makes you happy.”

Brinley’s eyes softened noticeably. “I love what I do, Jake. It’s what I was meant to do. It’s not glamorous or exciting to most people. I’ll never be world famous. But it’s what I was meant to do.”

She waited for a few seconds then gave him one of those impish grins. “Besides… I hate dealing with the public. I can just see myself at some big event with publicity all around me. And about two seconds after I have had it with people for one day, I’d be famous all right… for going off on some poor little old lady when she asked me if I could please sign my book for her baby, Schnookums… who just happens to be the pet pot-bellied pig at her side wearing a purple sunbonnet, a pink tutu and trying to eat my expensive designer, diamond encrusted tennis shoes right off of my feet.”

By the time she finished they were both laughing so hard their eyes were watering and they were out of breath. They had barely managed to quiet some when Jake blurted out “Schnookums” on a boisterous laugh and they were off again.
